JGeorge P. Ganison (ed.), Texan Diplomatic Corresvonclcnce, The Annual Rcvort of the Amcrican Historical Associatioii, v908, II (1), 51. Executive Record Book No. 38, p. 13, Texas State Library. ~William H. Wharton. See Houston to John A. Wharton, April 14, 1835. ::Memucan Hunt was born in North Carolina. He came to Texas in 1836, arriving after the Battle of San Jacinto. He served as the Texan minister to the United States, 1837-1838, and was Secretary of the Navy during Lamar's administration, 1838-1839 (Garrison, Texan Diplomatic Corre- s1>onclence, I, 160). When Texas was recognized by the United States, a treaty was made between the two nations for running the bounrlary between them. Both countries considered the terms of this treaty dear enough, nr.d John Overton on the part of the United States, and Memucan Hunt for Texas, were selected as commissioners to run the line; when these men met, however, at the mouth of the Sabine to begin the actual work com- mitted to them, instead of running the line, they began squabbling about whether the mouth of the Sabine River was through the middle of Lake Sabine, or on the west bank. This discussion was kept going till all the Texas appropriation for the service had been expended without determin- ing the boundary. See D. G. Wooten (ed.), Comprehensive History of Texas, I, 366. For biographical data concerning Memucan Hunt, see DeBow's ReV?·ew, XIII, 416-419.
