To the Honorable The Senate Gentlemen

I have the pleasure to nominate and shall be pleased to appoint Robert Barr Esq.~ for the office of Post Master General, and respectfully ask the concurrence of the Senate Sam Houston 1 Secret Journals of the Senate of the Republic of Texas, 1836-1845, p. 41, E. W. Winkler (ed.). 2 Robert Barr was born in Ohio in 1802; he arrived in Texas before December 5, 1833. On December 22, 1836, he was appointed the first Post- master General of the Republic of Texas; and was reappointed to the same office by Lamar. He died at Houston, October 11, 1839, and was buried the next day by the Masons, the Odd Fellows, and the Milam Guards. As time goes by, his wife, Amelia E. Barr, is better remembered than he, l.Jecause she is the author of a few books that are still sometimes 1·ead. In 1878, Robert Barr had three sons living; one in Austin, Texas, the other two in Ohio.

Jackson registered in Milam's Colony for a headright in 1835, the location of this land being in what is now Rusk County. Muste1· Roll Books, "Captain Baker's Company Roll," General Land Office, shows a footnote that reads: "Jackson, an officer belonging to the regular army, served as a private in Captain Baker's company at San Jacinto." Little else is to be found concerning this man except that he died at Bastrop in 1840. William Cannon was appointed administrator of his estate. See Dixon and K~mp, Heroes of San Jacinto, 194.
