You may rely upon it our war should be defensive- The Col- onies during the revolution lost by the attempt to take possession of Quebec. Their independence was established by defensive warfare. We must also rely upon that for our Salvation. If a few Indians can break up our settlements, is it not an argument against Carrying the war into the enemy's Country, while we leave our own without protection? To THE CITIZENS OF TEXAS 1

Nacogdoches, Texas 29th Aug 1836

To the Citizens of Texas! From reports which have reached me, I am induced to believe our situation is unsafe! Some Cherokees with the notorious Cor- tinus have, just returned to the Cherokee village, from Matamoros, and say that the Indians of the Priaras [Prairies] are about to attack this portion of Texas, with a Mexican force! The Counties of San Augustine, Sabine, Tennehaw & Bevell as well as Nacogdoches will forthwith organize the Militia of each County and report to the Cong. Genl with all possible dispatch. The following requisition is made to sustain the U. States forces at this place, until reinforcements can arrive from Genl Gaines Sixty five from San Augustine Fifty six from Tennehaw; Fifty six from Sabine, and thirtyy three from Bevill The troops will repair to this place with the least possible delay. This call is made thro' the judges of the several counties and they must be regarded as the authorities of the land!
