Hoffman was elected Alcalde and George Pollitt was again made first rigador; but Hoffman left Nacog- doches in April, 1836, and went to Pendleton on the Sabine River. To George Pollit~ Alcalde &c Sir I have the honor to suggest to you the total neglect of the public property, Lots &c. of this place, and wou'd therefore re- spectfully recommend to your honor, that the same should be leased, (but not sold) for such term of years and on such condi- tions as you may deem of the greatest advantage to public inter- est, and the improvement of its property; the enclosure of Lots, and building placed thereon, will add to the value of property, and afford advantages to Lessees, who might not otherwise, be enabled to procure a Lot or lots, on which to improve. No author- ity has as yet been granted by the Government for the sale of public property, yet there can be no doubt but what the corpora- tion, has a right to lease and render useful the same! Dear Gen 1• Mr Whiteside of this neighborhood returned here yesterday, and says it is the intention of the army to march on Matamoras. He further reports that it is understood in the Army, that the Mexican troops have all been withdrawn from that place--. The latter report is probable. The former I do hope is not true. If the latter is true, I should imagine it to be a "ruse de Guerre." The troops if withdrawn at all, are doubtless withdrawn with a view to induce an attack on Matamoras, and if our army should advance upon it, they can easily concentrate a strong force on the
