insure the protection of individual rights, and honestly promote the true interests of their Country. I believe a Convention called by the Army would attain this object. I regret that the situation of my wound as well as my general health has heretofore pre- vented my joining the Army. They are both improving and I pray you to assure my Comrades in Arms that I will be proud to reunite with them so ·soon as practicable, which I devoutly hope will be at no distant period. Until then I shall only feel interested in their honor and happiness. This letter as well as all the accompanying papers are through you submitted for the information of the army, accompanied by my warmest regards. Sam Houston Comr in Chi~f. [Endorsed]: Gen. Sam Houston to Gen. Rusk, Nacogdoches, August 8, 1836. 1 Sam Houston Lette1·s, Texas State Library. This old letter is so brittle and mutilated that it has been difficult to make an accurate copy. When- ever there were sufficient letters of a word left at a torn place to enable the reader to make a reasonably correct guess, the supposed word has been placed in brackets; if no letters remained to lead to such a guess the <-mission dots are used to indicate the fact. 2 See the Southwest1;rn Histo1·ical Quarterly, XXXI, 191-220. There Dr. Rupert N. Richardson gives a detailed study of "Framing the Constitution of the Republic of Texas." See also John J. Lynn, Fifty Yccu·s in Texas, 65, and R. M.
