As·to my own wishes they are only for the best interests & honor of my country. You have friends throtighout America; each has his sphere, & each will feel & act, from the best motives- Some one or two Gentlemen quit the house on the occasion. They will repent it! 1 Jackson MSS., U.S. Congressional Library: Photostat, The University of Texas Library. 2 William Berkeley Lewis (1784-November 12, 1866), was a large planter of Tennessee, and a devoted friend of Jackson. He was an astute politician, managed Jackson's campaign for the Presidency, managed his inaugural ce1·emonies, became a member of the famous "Kitchen Cabinet," and served during Jackson's first administration as Second Auditor of the Treasury. Gent Jackson Dr Sir From a friend in Alabama I had the pleasure to receive a letter of the 6th Inst. He is the partner of Wm Kelly Esq Senator/ & from an extract of his letter to me you wiJl discover Mr. Crawford 0 is not the favorite of Alabama, as has been stated. I well know that my friend, & Kelly accord in sentiment. "Every possible plan has been laid, & every exertion made to have the representation prepared for Walkers· 1 resignation, so as to put in McKinley.G Two weeks of the Session had expired before Kelly heard of the resignation, and at the eleventh hour without having had a previous idea of it, & without having endeavored to conci!iate a friend, he resolved to go down and
