To JoHN C. CALHOUNL

Nashville 6 th July 1822 Sir I ha\'e the honor to acknowledge the receipt of Draft N° 1251 on the Nashville Bank, by virtue of your Warrant N° 4413 for $170.9/100. I have presented the Draft, but it was not paid. A refusal made to pay it in U. States notes or silver, and I would not receive money at 27 per cent under U. States notes or silver. And when I had requested you to have a Draft sent to me, pay- able at Washington City, Baltimore, or Philadelphia. I have returned the Draft to the Treasurer, and requested him to send me one payable at some of the before named places. I can see no reason for the course of conduct pursued by you, towards me; unless it be that I am the same man against whom you conceived so strong a prejudice in 1818, when I was assist. Indian Agent. Sir I could have forgotten the unprovoked injuries inflicted upon me, if you were not disposed to continue them. But your reiteration shall not be unregarded. I will remember your per- sonal bad treatment-Your official injustice after my absence from the City. All this will I remember as a man. As a citizen of Tennessee. I will mark your Treaty of 1819 with the Cherokees at Washington. It was a treaty replete with mischief to our state. All feel it but few, know its author, when he is known the People will execrate him with a United voice. I had hoped that all these matters would have rested, inasmuch, as the end intended was not realized; I know it well; it was to oblige a Senator-secure his interest, and crush a Sub-Agent. You can now judge whether or not, I gave you a just character of the Senator; when you asked me the cause of our difference. It is unpleasant to me at all times to advert to subjects of this kind, and too when mens acts, are the severest animadversion upon their characters. I only wish you to do me justice. Sam Houston Hon J C Calhoun
