ecclesiastical rule was ever strictly enforced in America; it is certain that many of the early Texans who became nominal Catholics, did not observe it. It has been authoritatively stated that Houston did not use this signature more than a half dozen times in his life, and that all the documents bearing it were written at Nacogdoches, shortly after his baptism into the Roman Church. No other documents with this signature have been found. HOUSTON TO JOHN MORAL To Citizen John Mora, Primary Judge in the first Instance, of the Municipality of Nacogdoches. Citizen John Lesslicher, in the best form he may, by his agent presents himself to Your honor, and represents that a certain George Anthony Nixon, a resident of the Municipality aforesaid, does actually owe, and is justly indebted to the said John divers large sums of money, amounting to Eight hundred and seventy seven dollars; (as will appear by the account of the said John, which is herewith exhibited and is made a part of this petition), which sums of money, he, the said George Anthony, though often required by the said John, has wholly refused, and yet refuses to pay to the damage of the said John Fifteen hundred dollars, therefore he brings suit. The Plaintiff in this action, prays that Your honor will cause the aforesaid George Anthony Nixon be cited to appear before Your honor, that then and there he be compelled to answer; and that the case may be tried by a jury of the Country, that the parties in the Suit may receive the Verdict of the Jury and the Judgment of the Court.. And the said John further prays that he may have all costs of Suit with all other necessary & proper relief in the premises according to law and justice, and as in duty bound he will ever pray.
