This land in Burnet's Colony was located on·the west bank of Sand Bayou. 2 In the Application Book for Burnet's Colony, in the General Land Office, the original was first w1·itten: "I have come with my family, consisting of" •.. This clause was deleted and "sin familia" inserted. While the applica- tion reads for a league of land, the field notes show that only a third of a league was surveyed.
HOUSTON'S PETITION IN BEHALF OF A CLIENT 1
[April, 1835] To Citizen John Mora Primary Judge in the first instance of the Municipality of Nacogdoches, Citizen John C. Leplecher, by his attorney, and Agent repre- sents, for as much, as he was sued by Archibald Hotchkiss, for sundry large sums of money, and whereas, said Archibald; ac- tually owes to him the said John C. great sums, of money, as well as damages, for great injuries done to the said John C. by the said Archibald. And the said Archibald having left, and absented himself from the jurisdiction in which the Suit is now pending for trial; The said John C. by his attorney, and Agent, prays that Arthur Henrie, the Agent, & attorney of the said Archibald, may be compelled to give to your Honor, good and sufficient Security, for the faithful payment of all Moneys, dam- ages, and costs, which May accrue to the said John C. by the event aforesaid suit; And further the said John C. represents that he does verilyi believe, that his rights will not be secures against manifest injustice, and great wrong, if the Security or bail, solicited in this petition is not granted as required. It seems that it is, or was formerly, a rule of the Roman Catholic Church, that everyone who is baptized into its communion should assume, in addition to his own name, the name of some saint, and that this baptismal name must be used in signing legal documents. It is doubtful whether this
