Mc. 1VIinn= 1 1 Smn Houston Lette1·s, The University of Texas Library. ~on January 1, 1817, Houston was assigned to duty in the office of the Adjutant General for the Southern Division of the United States Army. In November of the same year he was. withdrawn from that duty and sent as sub-agent for the United States Government to the Cherokee Indians. Edwards Lester wrote four books on the life of Sam Houston; namely, Sam Houston ancl His Re7mbl-ic, 1846; Sam Houston, the only Aiithent-ic Memoirs of him ever 7mbHshecl, 1855; The Life of Sam Houston, 1867; The L-ife of Sann Houston, 1883. The last three books are practically identical-the same in context, language, and style, and only slightly different in organization. They differ from the 1846 edition chiefly in the addition of extracts from documents from Houston's pen, that were written after 1846. The first three· books-more correctly editions-were published anonymously and were not copyrighted. The 1883 edition bears the author's name on the title page, and includes a five-page introduction,
