I must have $1,000.- At the end of 12 months, one thousand dollars more, and at the end of 18 months, $1,000. I will then feel bound to give my advice, and whatever else may be needful, to secure the rights of the Grantees, and Company, until their • rights are secured! This is the only proposition that I have to make, and should any contingrnt interests be proposed, that jus- tice to me might require, it may be arranged by the Company. I should not feel bound to be subserviant, or to promote the interest of any Company by which I am not employed!

Genl. Sarni. Houston Washington My Dear Sir, I felt much chagrin at the result of my effort to obtain the retaining fre necessary to engage your attention as counsel for the Galveston bay and Texas Land Co.- The Sever~l persons to whom I applied and on whom I supposed I could rely to aid in the affair appear to appreciate your talents and servicec; highly, but feeling at this time much disposed their finances and discouraged about the affares of Texas,- prefer to take their chance to lose all rather than add more to the risk they are willing to give a large continent fee [free] dependent on the cession of Texas to this country or upon the legal and ... !! pos- session of the titles in fee of a considerable part of their Grants In case their should be any change of circumstances, thqt would lead to any incriesed confidence of favourable results, the cha [n] ce of which would be increased by the expenditure of money it can be commanded to any extent in proportion to the prospects of beneficial results-at present all things in Texas appear so dark and doubtful those who know less than you and [I] ... !! that I cannot induce any persons to advance the amount you require-- and knowing your detumernation not to acept a smaller sum-I have not proposed any-I however yet think it may be for your interest not to be opposed to the interest of those conditions of ·these grants- and advise that you hold yourself free from any
