~Robert H. McEwen was Houston's cousin. See Houston to Colonel Alex- ander Campbell, April 25, 1815. To JAMES PRENTISS 1 Nashville, T, 15 th Sept 1832 My dear Sir, A few days since I wrote you that I would leave in Deposit all the Scrip which I had received from you with Colonel Robt H. McEwen of this place; To day I forward to you as advised his receipt for the same, and trust you will forthwith forward my notes. I was perhaps mistaken in the amount-it may be that it was $8502.90 cents, whatever the amount may be I want you to forward the notes. · All considerations have certainly failed, on your part, which were held out as inducements to me and as your letters will shew upon their face. I have only lossed some two months about the matter, and if this was induced by disingenuousness I regret it the more. It may be that it was otherwise, and if so it might be an extenua- tive. As to the interest which I now have in the Leftwich Grant it depends entirely upon my personal service, and no one could have claim of law or justice to it, but such as I may voluntarily admit! The matter of Texas, has to my mortification, not turned out, as I had hoped and believed, but I shall "cast my bread upon the waters, and look for its return after many days" Tomorrow morning I am to set out for there! If funds have been forwarded, my agent Col. McEwen of this Place is to forward them and any papers accompanying them. You will perceive that I will be un- able to do anything for the Company in my present Situation. You can write to me at Natchitoches, wh [ere] I will, in all probably be when your [letter] arrives, if not it will be sent to me soon. Salute my friends- Jackson God bless him, cholera, or no cholera. Sam Houston. Mr. Jas Prentiss [ Addressed] : Mr. James Prentiss New York N. Y. Mail [ Endorsed] : General Sarni Houstons letter 15 Sept. 1832. [ Postmarked] : Nashville T Sep 15 1James Prentiss Lette1·s, The University of Texas Library.
