nothing more upon it! Delay may produce the following conse- quences to the Grandees. England may seek to derive Title thro the King of Spain, or it may obtain a lien from the Mexican Government, when in either event it would render it a bone of contention betwe:m England an.d the U. States. Whichever power should succeed, would claim it by conquest, and the Grantees, would be compelled to accept terms, and not dictate them! There is, a better plan !! F I have not engaged any one to go with me, but would if I were sure that the company would desire it, and that the means at my disposal would be su.fjicient! Upon this point be explicit, and let me know when I am to set out, or whether all things are arranged for it, and in what manner? The land which I bought, to. be candid with you has claimed not much solicitude of me. l looked to other matters. But now I want you to just say what you would prefer on the subject, as I have no wishes of my own. Some of the most salable I might need in Tennessee, and it might be well to have enough with me · to form a pretext, when I get there, for moving about, and in locating- You may be an equal partner in all I take if you wish it, or you may do as seems best to you, at the same time, "Doing as you would that others should do unto you!" It might be of vast importance that I should have some one with me, if I were taken sick; and one in whose wisdom and in- telligence I could confide. Think of this subject! You were aware when I bought the land, on what you had to rely for pay- ment. What ever you wish done I will do, but let all our matters be as prompt as possible. My trial is to take place on the 12th Inst, and will be ended in one day, I hope. Mason not being heard from will require prompt measures, or I am a dolt! My time will be employed in preparation to set out, I will see the ·"Old Chief" 8 and bid him "God speed." The young gentleman of whom I spoke to you is not in the City now ·but has gone to his Fathers in ·Loudoun Va. I will write for him tonight that he may be here by the time I get your answe1·.
