JOHN A. WHARTON TO HOUSTON 1

New Orleans June 2 nd 1832 Dear Sir I did hope to have heard from you before this, but knowing that you have been occupied with other matters; I read- ily account for your silence. Much has been said in the papers about your affair with Stanberry both "pro and con," and from all that I have read, and heard, you certainly have lost nothing, but on the other hand your conduct has been approved by a large majority throughout the Union; so far as I am concerned, (and I profess to feel mostly deeply in your wellfare) I do most sin- cerely and heartily rejoice at your whipping the puppy, and I read with pleasure and pride the account of your bearing through- out: this is the case with all of your friends hae, that I have heard express themselfs. Mr Phelan 2 informed me that you· in- tended to publish an address to the people should it be probable . that I will not meet with it in the ordinary channels, I would thank you to send me a copy., and should you find time to write, it would be highly gratifying to me. Archer of Virginia a letter of introduction to you; Dr Archer has been in Texas for upwards of twelve months, is intimately acquainted with matters and things there, and is in the confidence of all of their leading men He is of opinion that there will be some fighting there next
