WRITINGS OF 5AM HOUSTON, 1830
HOUSTON TO MAJOR WILLIAM B. LEWIS 1
Mouth of White River 20th May 1830 My dear Sir You kind offer of services induces the present Epistle. The enclosed letter will apprise you of my wishes, and is unsealed that you may read- Seal it, and hand it to General Eaton. It was niy intention to have written to you at length the day before I left Nashville, but my ague and fever returned with great violence, and when I did leave there I was very ill. When I was at Fairfild, G:::nl. Gaines 2 & myself rode out and took pot luck with our friend Earl, and I found every thing about the House and place in prime order. Bennett does very well, and all the Domestics were crazy to see you. Indeed, things all go on well. I learned that our Billy Carro!l3 is about to visit you at the city. You knew the veracious gentleman, and I will say that he has not changed his associates Jeffuy and John P. Ervin. Now, you know how far he is from Clay! My honest belief is that if I would again return to Tennessee I would beat him for Governor, but I am too poor! ! ! I have a knowledge, too, of the late publication at Gallatin,~ though it did not come out until I had left Nashville, tho I stayed ten days longer than I proposed when I went there- when they lost all hopes of a reunion, they came out with large names (respectable, I grant) and Gen 1• Morris 5 - only that he was a General (from Indiana). They sent Mrs. H. to Carthage least she should come to Nash- ville, in spite of them and I would not receive her. If she had come this would have be€n the case, so I said to my friends from the time I arrived there. Great efforts, and strong hopes of fame were held out to me but, all of no use. Tho' the world can never know my situation and may condemn me God will justify me! I will be grateful if you can serve me, and I pray you to present me to the General, and may you be prosperous. I wrote to the General the other day thro' Mr. Van Buren- b::cause I dont like to write to often to one person where my hand writ may be known. You will think this letter wants arrangement. The Steam Boat is just ready to start for Cantonment G. 0 and in haste I have made some mistakes, and I write with my gloves on, on account of the mosquitoes. I ·have heard more of Duval's 7 rascality but have not time to tell you of it. Sam Houston
