WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1827

To THE TENNESSEE LEGISLATURE 1 Executive Officz, Nashville 3d Dec. 1827.
Gentlemen of the Senate and of the House of Representatives: In obedience to a resolution of the Grneral Assembly of the 7th ult. requiring "a statement, shewing the number and descrip- tion of arms belonging to the state," &c., I have the honor to submit the enclosed letter, received from my predecessor in office. Since the first day of October, 40 stands of arms have been issued to Capt. Dew of Wilson county, and 60 to Capt Edmonson, of Warren county. These added to 1149 previously distributed, will amount to 1249 muskets, now in the hands of volunt~er companies. Experience has shown, that the law, pointing out the mode of distributing the public arms is defective in some of its provisions, and I would, therefore, respectfully call the attention of the legislature to that subject. SAM HOUSTON. [Endorsed] : Governor's Message 3 De 1827 Arms & H. of R. Dec. 4th 1827 Read and ordered to be sent to the S£nate Tho. J. Campbell elk Senate Dec 4th 1827 Read and referred to the Military committee. R. Dance elk
