Cabeza de Vaca returned to Spain. Undismayed by his experiences, he petitioned the king for a grant to conquer and settle the lands he had Yisited in Florida. But he arri ved too late. The grant had already been made to Hernando de Soto. The former companion of Pizarro offered inducements to the scarred veteran of the Narvaez expedition, but he refused to go as a second again. He lived to carry the flag of Spain to the unexplored region of La Plata River in South America. 96
