months before through the good offices of Rivera was now canceled, 78 and a new province was created to include Panuco and Rio de las Palmas. This new jurisdiction was to be known as La Provincia del Rio de Panuco e Victoria Garayana, and included, in fact, the entire area formally granted to Garay under the designation of Amichel. 79 Nmio de Guzman becomes Governor of Pameco and Victoria Garnyana. It happened that at this time there were two men, perhaps brothers, Gon- zalo and Nuno Guzman, at the court of Spain, who appear to have won the good graces of the king. Gonzalo, who had been in the service of Diego Velazquez, Governor of Cuba, was, therefore, appointed to the govern- ment of this island; while Nuno de Guzman, who had a reputation as a learned lawyer and a man of courage and determination, was appointed governor of the new Province of Pfouco and Victoria Garayana, which included the Rio de las Palmas and all the lands along the Gulf coast to Florida.'° Thus the future conqueror of Nueva Galicia, who was to achieve the reputation of being one of the most cruel conquistadors of New Spain, succeeded the ill-fated Garay as governor of a portion of present day Texas. Nuno de Guzman was a native of the city of Guadalajara, Spain. He came of a noble and ancient family. Prior to his appointment as Governor e Panuco and Victoria Garayana he had lived in the Island of Hispaniola, ving resided for a time in the Villa de Puerto de Plata, where he held I· encomienda. He was of medium height, according to a description left JS by Mota Padilla, discreet, and well-mannered. He was reputed to be an able lawyer, a man of great personal courage, and of limitless ambition. He was determined and persistent, could endur~ hardships, but he seldom listened to advice. By nature he was active, proud, and cruel.
