Sir:

The General Commanding the Department directs me to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 26th and 27th of May, and those from Capt Plummer of the 21st and 23rd of the same month, and to say that he has already ordered two additional companies of Cavalry to Camp Cooper. Major Van Dorn will be directed to hasten the movements of these Com- panies as much as possible. The General further directs me to say that he wishes you to use every possible means in your power to prevent a collision of the United States troops and the Citizens of Texas. The General approves of your action in retaining company "D," 2nd Cavalry at your post, under the circumstances, but wishes that Company and Company "I" 1st Infantry to com- ply with the orders already issued in regard to them as soon as you can dispense with their services.
