65 Isaac W. Johnson was elected captain I had the Honor to be elected 1st Lieut & James A Burke 2nd Lieut since then the company has been kept actively employed in scouting the coun- try between the San Antonio & Neuesces rivers, The companys station was twenty miles above Goliad on the San Antonio river, Thtis I am happy to inform you that through the vigilance of the company they were enabled to keep the enemy out of the coun- try, About two months and a half after the company was mus- tered into the service of the State the commanding officer of the United States fources General Brook made a requisition for three companies of mounted men, we immediately on the reception of the news repaired to San Antonio to be mustered into the United States service, but on arriving there to our great mortification found our company forestalled by three new companies, at your suggestion to the captain and myself to return to our old station and complete the time for which we had been enlisted for under the state, and with the assurance that if you were elected Gov- enor you would use every means in your power with the Legisla- ture for our pay, we returned and continued the duty as hereto- fore trusting to the magnanimity of the State Legislature to remunerate us for our services, Unfortunately a short time after our return from San An- tonio Capt Johnson got into an affray and was killed, The com- mand devolving on me as the Senior officer the duties of the company was continued as previously, but one other death has occured in the company since its organization private John A Reed was accidentally drowned in crossing the San Antonio river by falling from a boat on the 1st day of January 1850. There has been considerable sickness in the company who · weer happily ministered to by our talented fellow citizen-Dr J. L. McKenney whose services should by no means go unre- warded he having endured constant exposure in attendance on the sick, he having been engaged as physician for the company by Capt Johnson. Justice demands that he should be remuner- ated, I remain with great respect your Excellencies most obedi- ent servant Goliad J anr 7th 1850 R. E. SUTTON, Lieut commanding Goliad Rangers
