will seek such, regardless of rousing the vengeance of the well disposed tribes against the people they are hired to defend, and drawing upon them the enmity of the numerous and warlike tribes now within our limits. Sir, I have the honor to enclose herewith for your information an extract of a letter from Major Babbit, U. S. Army, reporting the murder of certain Indians within the limits of Texas by a party of men said to be in the service of the Mexican State of Chihuahau, and a copy of a communication made upon the sub- ject by this Department to the Secretary of State to whom ap- pertains the cognizance, of the affair so far as it may involve a correspondence with the Mexican Authorities.
