No. 180 LETTER FROM GEN. D. E. TwIGGS TO GOVERNOR RUNNELS Head Quarters, Department of Texas, San Antonio, July 12th, 1858

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Excel- lency's communication of the 9th instant. Soon after my arrival in this Department I became convinced that the Indian depredations could only be checked by sending an armed force into their country, and they be made to feel the power of the Government to chastise them. I have made repeated application for a force sufficient for that purpose, and as yet no portion of the Army can be spared for that duty. Enclosed I send you a copy of two communications from me to the General-in-chief.

Very respectfully,

Your obt. servant, D. E. TWIGGS Bvt. Major General, USA Comdg Dept.

To

His Excellency H. R. Runnels

Governor of the State of Texas Austin, Texas
