I think the Legisla- tion complete on that point, and it only remains to see that it is faithfully carried out. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Ex- cellencys letter of the 28th ult. and to enclose copy of instruc- tions given to the Commanding Officer at Fort Elliott, to whom your Agent should apply for such escort as my be needed. I was very glad to receive your thanks for my action in re- gard to the Indians from Fort Sill who crossed Red River. We of the Military force are always anxious to prevent even the appearance of dangE:r from our Indian tribes. We are not always successful in this, but even when we are, it is not always that our efforts are appreciated. In the particular case in question the Indians crossed into Texas with no evil intent but in pursuit of game which they were led to believe they would find within a short distance of
