Sir I have the honor to enclose herewith for your information copy of letter of August 4th inst from U.S. Indian Agent E. W. Wynkoop, informing the Department of the recovery of a white female child about 8 years old that had been taken captive by the Comanche Indians. together with copies also of two letters from John E. Tappan dated respectively July 13 and July 20th 1868, reporting delivery to him of a white boy four and a white girl about eleven years old stating that he had turned them over to General Alfred Sully. This information is transmitted to you by the Department with the view of ascertaining the whereabouts of the parents or relatives of these children, who from the statement of one of them it would appear were cap- tured in Texas, and of enlisting your aid and cooperation in re- storing them to their friends.
