No. 132 LETTER FROM C. TERRY TO J. W. THROCKMORTON [April 23, 1867]
Dear Sir
From a notice by the Chief Justice of Uvalde Co I infer your Excellency has issued a Proclamation to find out the num- ber and value of horses stolen by Indians within the last eight-: een months If everyone was honest and free from selfishness this letter would be uncalled for, but we all know that is not the case. I think from thirty five to fifty dollars a fair price for Span- ish cow Ponies and every one should be glad to get that sum in Greenbacks I have put in Eight Horses valued by my self at Seven hun- dred dollars and the high apparent valueation calls forth this remark I know the selfishness of man and the desire they have too make all they can off of the State or U. S. Government, which I think is verry wrong, Four of my horses I call Cow Ponies $37½ $150.00 Two work horses for which I was offored in Gold· 300.00 One Stable horse valued by others at $300, & by my self 150.00 Do Do " " " " 100.00 $700.00 I have never expected to get one Dollar and if I receive Some however Small compensation it will be with feelings of Gratitude and Esteem for and through the Source from whence it comes If not intrudeing and out of place I would be very glad and thankful if you will inform me how too proceed to Try to get pay for cattle Stolen by Mexicans and taken into Mexico
