Lamar President of the Republic of Texas Dear Sir In obedience to your instructions of the 26th. of J uly 89 I called upon the surveyor of Bastrop County and collected all the in- formation necessary for me to survey the Uni,ersity reservation. The only difficulty I meet with is getting a sufficient guard, to render my operations certain, after I commence the survey, I could collect sixty or seventy men at any time provided I would allow them to locate lands during the time of their service, but should I make such an arrangement, I am well aware that as soon as they could locate their own Lands, they woulcl desert me before I 'could accomplish the surveys for the Government, Judge Waller is willing that Capt.
