My friends here insist that I should permit my name to be presented as a candidate for Congress- to which I think I shall consent, as I believe I can do more in sustaing [ sic J the policy of your administra- tion in Congress than in the Cabinet. It is believed that I can be elected with[out] the necessity of Can- vassing the election, as my course in Congress has met the approbation of voters of the County. I would therefore be enabled during the sum- mer to cooperate with you, in preparing such measures, as you may be called on to submit to the next congress The general sentiment as far as I can judge is in favor of a bank, It will then be a matter of vital importance, as to the plan such an institu- tion shall be placed. · How far the plan 83 of Genl. Hamilton will meet the ,vants or views of the Country I am unable to determine; and it will be well to pause well over this subject; as it is one of primary consideration The country will sustain the Santa-Fe expedition, and look forward to important results growing out of it. · . Your administration is becoming more popular, and a consumation of peace with Mexico- the loan, running of the boundary line, and a treaty with the U. S. will give to it a brilliant termination. I shall spare no efforts to be with you by the 1st of July- Mrs Mayfield will accompany me, whom I flatter myself you will find an agreable friend-
Yours truly
