PAPERS OF MIRABEAU BUONAPARTE LA.MAR
the most liberal construction of the law, the Republic would, at this day, have been burthened with an unjust debt. If the act should be so amended as to protect the Republic against fraud and the extravagant computations in the value of property- which seems to be a common error, when a claim is held against the Government-: I believe that the members of the Board can proceed to adjudge all such claims in a satisfactory manner, and to the interest of the Republic. I transmit here with a statement 44 of the amount and character of the claims allowed by the Court, for [which] drafts have been drawn and paid by the Treasurer, previous to the order of the Executive to stop payment, as also the amount drawn since that time, and now re- maining unpaid. All of which I have the [honor] to submit, and remain with the grea[test] regard Your obedient servant l\1usgrove Evans 2d Auditor [Endorsed] Second Auditor Octo 28. 1839 No. 1510 1839 Oct. 28, E. C.
