I could gel nothing definite out of Van Buren at his dinner although we had much conversation. He professed to believe all the accounts in relation lo Santa Annas Capture and said that his feelings were decidedly with us. It being the opinion of the Government that there will be no further need for Volunteers this summer, You will take such means as· you may deem discreet, to prevent their coming until further notice from the Government.- This is a delicate proceeding, which you will have to exe- cute in such a way as to give no offence-It will be proper for for you to suggest the Season of the Year, as being unpropitious to foreigners, & the probability of there being no fighting till next Winter, as the reason for this postponement.
