Lexington Ky 2nd June 1836
Dr Sir,
Maj. Horatio Groons [?) has been selected by the friends of Texas in this quarter as major in the Detachment from this place, he served in the late war in the US service as Lieut in the Rifle Regt under Col Anthony Butler and has the reputation of a prudent brave officer. Major Grooms is my brother in law & I beg that you will extend to him your particular attention - he entered into the service of Texas at the most gloomy period of his History & if occasion requires will be found ready to defend her to the last. The engagement of the men from this quarter in the month past was for the division under Genl T. J. Chambers but the delay in that corps has induced the Louisville line of which I am a member lo hasten the departure of the force Lo be considered volunteers willing to serve your country as long as any enemy may be found.

I remain Dr Sir yr Obt Servl Joseph Ficklin
To Genl. S. F. Austin
P. S. Should your duties confine you to the civil department of your Government I request you to give Major Grooms a letter to Genl Sam) Houston.
