(3248] [JACK to ST. JOHN]

Dep-artment of State Velasco 1st June 1836

Samuel St John Esq. Sir,

I am instructed, by the President and Cabinet of th Gov- ernment ofTexas, to say to you that we have viewed your conduct with pleasure and are impressed with a sense of the liveliest grati- tude for the repeated evidences of disintercsted liberality which our country has received at your hands. In times of general prosperity, the capitalist, who advances funds to a government deserves nothfog more than a fair remuner- ation for his loan. But when an infant Republic, just spmng into existence, without a government at home or credit abroad, is com- pelled lo carry on a defensive war against a powcrful Tyrant, whose watchword was extermination, and whose march is traced by the desolation which is left behind him-When a cloud of the most dark and angry character was lowering over us; When "Hope deferred" had almost sunk into despondency, the man who, like you, could make such liberal donations deserves and receives a Nations gratitude. But for the frequent and well limed aid which you, and such as you, have so liberally afforded, it is scarcely probable that we could have sustained the war up lo this period, and Texas, the fairest portion of the continent, might now have been what Santa Anna had threatened to make il a "howling wilderness." It affords us however pleasure to inform you that a very short time has produced a most fortunate change in the aspect of our affairs, and we have every reason to hope for a speedy termination of Lhe war. Should your inclination ever lead you lo visit our country, you will find that your conduct has made impressions, which will not be obliterated by time or forgotten in the hour of good for- tune. Please except the assurances of my high consideration and

regard.
