· From a feeling of duly to my officers and crew I submit to your consideration the foregoing statements and in addition thereto it may be as well lo stale that Captain Hurd informed me I was lo be dismissed from the command of my vessel If so I would like lo know what arc the charges alleged against me-I never will shrink from an investigation of my official conduct
Very Respectfully Yr. Obedient Servant J. Brown Sehr. Invincible May 30th 1836
Dear Sir-
I have the honor to inform you that on last evening we saw a vessel in the Offing, showing a flash of a musket which we took lo be a bright light; (Knowing it lo be a Mexican Signal) we got under weigh. after running clown and signalizing we knew it be the Brutus- The Brutus' Capln must have known by our signals that we were the Jnvincible-If so fgnoranl not to know and thinking we were and enemy-why should he ren from 11s, if knowing that it was the Invincihle why fire into us-this Sir is a question I hope will be investigated-& why did Capln or Commodore Hawkins hail the Gun which was fired al us-this Information I received from Captn Hurd-also he told me that Cl Hawkins wished to fire a broad side into us-being in haste, any more information wanter!
