I wrote him so soon as J clclcrmi11ccl lo join the Tcn11cssce Volunteers called lo the Western borders, that I did this under a belief that we would nol be marched further than Memphis, and IJrnL if I had the means there ready, that I could carry the whole army with me lo Texas. I have no doubt but Lhal Capt Grundy will be enabled lo raise one company lo march forthwith lo Texas, if they ca11 be assured of the necessity. In hasle, Tam respectfully Your humble Servant R.G. Dunlap [3223) [FERNANDEZ Lo COMMANDERJ Excellent Sir:-The provisions that existed in this port were sent lo Copano, on board the schooner Watchman, as I have informed your Excellency, and as al present there are no provisions whatever in this place, I cannot comply with, as I would desire, the order which I yesterday received from your Excellency for this purpose. From Copano Lo Lipan ti tlan, which is the point where your Excellency advises me lo send them, is a shorter distance lo the army than from here, and my be conducted in less Lime lo the said Lipanlillan. Your Excellency, if it should seem proper, can give orders that they should be sent lo him to the greal advantage of the army under his command; because, although I should determine lo order them Lo be returned by sea lo this port, I find myself without any vessel al my disposal; and as they ought al this Lime to be discharged al Copano, therefore such a measure would always cause a delay, which would make them unnecessary by the Lime they could be in your Excellency's power. I have the honor Lo say this lo your Excellency, in due answer to the despatch referred lo, as also prolesling lo him my attention and sincere esteem. God and Liberty.-Matamoros, May 3Jst, 1936.-Franci~co V. Fernandez.-To his Excellency the commander-in-chief of the army of operations.
