New Orleans 30th May 1836.

To llis Excellency David G. Burnet Sir

l arrived here on monday last the 24th. Gen.I. Houston had reached here two days previously, and the sceptics were beginning to think it possible, that the report of Santa Annas capture might be true, though only a day or lwo before, bets ran high against it. The Genl is improving fast, and there are some preparations making here, to give him a dinner. A violent feeling has been excited by the Massacre of Fannings army. IL is said that Gent Jackson has sent in a message to Congress with close doors, and is believed it is to recommend some hostile measure in regard to Mexico. You have seen I suppose, that Genl. Gains has hen empowered, if in his opinion il becomes necessary to the safety of the U.S. border, to occupy Nacogdoches. A general impression prevails here, that Santa Anna will escape. A letter has been received from some one, that he is to be sent to Vera Cruz. As lo the escape I assure them there is no Danger-as to the latter l know nothing about it-only that I am myself well assured that whenever the Government act upon the subject in any way, it will not be without the consideration of the subject, and the maturely weighing of il in all its bearings, which will be the best guarantee for a correct course. Letters from Mexico speak of Santa Annas caphire with great mortification and indignation, and declare that Mexico is in disgrace, and must use every effort to wipe it off-that a large additional force will be sent to Texas-Others say they cannot do it, that Santa Anna made a great effort to raise th<> force which he did and thal no other Mexican can do as much. There may be more to fear frofu sea than lam.I-I understand an effort is making lo raise one or two stout ships of War, lmt I get no distinct information on the subject.
