[3213] [LAMAR to RUSKJ
Vclasco 30 ~lay 1836
Dear General [ Rusk I
I have just lime lo drop you one word and that is "adieu"-I shall in a few days march ou l of office and then march .for Georgia. I certainly should not abandon my present situation if I thought by remaining in it I could do any essenlial service to the country-My mechanical labors are great, but the influence of my councils on some of the vital questions is scarcely felt in the Cabinet; it is therefore meet that J retire-Day before yesterday Grayson & Collingsworth were appointed Commissioners lo the U.S. lo lay the basis of our admittance into that Confederacy as one of the Stales. I of course opposed it might & main, but its availed nothing-there was a united voice against my views of Texan Independence. The Commissioners will proceed in a day or two to Washington City on their errand; our old Commissioners are recalled-If you remember when Collingsworth was first proposed as a member of the Cabinet, he was rejected on the ground that he wm; in favor of attaching this country Lo the Govt. of the United States-a policy which we one and all so much rejected & repudiated that it was for a while an insuperable barrier to lhe addmission of that worthy gentleman into our Council, which difficulty was finally overcome in consideration of the great difficulty of obtaining any other person of suitable ability to fill the vacancy of the Hon. Canon. When the Measure was discus:;ed the other day I reminded the President & Cabinet of these facts, and they admitted the sudden revolution in their opinions on this important question-Zavala & Hardeman will sail in a few days probably in thelnvincible with Santa Anna this this suit for Vera Cruise-Thus you perceive the Cabinet will be left intircly vacated with the exception of the President & ~ol. Jack who has just been appoin led in the place of Collingsworth-Do you think that i ought to remain in office when l can render no service except such as may be performed by any county house gentleman-my councils are valuless-my labors m; clerk can be easily supplied-I believe thal Col. Sommerville has been written lo :mpply my vacancy. [ have no conjecture who will fill the other vacancie:; in the Cabinet-l have written to the Cabinet a long & heavy kllt•r
