A Spy has been perrnilled to range our Camp unmolested to ascrctain our Strength lo inform himself fully and particularly of our divisions and dissenlions in opinions our want of organization and in fact every thing which an enemy could desire & to prevent the mischiefs which would follow his return to an enemy numbering forty five hundred men under Arms and lo prevent an exasperated Army & citizens from terminating his existence I had him taken and sent to Velasco I had either done right or J had been greatly wanting in the discharge of my duty If the laLLer it was the imperative duty of the Cabinet to have arrested me and placed me upon my defence they chose in their after communications not lo mention the subject of his arrest but it seems from what I can learn unofficially that they have sat in Judgement & Condemned me and that they have chosen to sent the same obnoxious Spy and murderer of our Countrymen past an already excited Army camped amongst the bones of the butchered Countrymen which now bleach the prairie around their Encampment am I expected to permit this man to pass into the Camp of the Enemy am I expected to give our enemy all the advantages of a knowledge of our Situation ls it expected of me that I can restrain the passions of a Brother when his murderer in view of the bones of the butcherd is passing without the restraints of modisty throughout our Camp Are we to lie down suffering our most sacred rights to be trampled under foot by barbarians And then give them all the advantages they ask I choose not to do so and have sent out a detachment to prevent him from again entering the Mexican Army in Texas while some of our Brave and honorable men are within the power of an enemy who are notorious for the want of good faith and honesty It is believed here and I fcar not without reason that Santa Anna is to be sent lo Vera Cruz is this possible!!! Can it be possible that this strange this unaccountable this Sucidle policy is advocated by Len men in Texas if it is and a majority of the Cabinet are of that opinion I dread to see the consequences which will follow at home the action upon such opinion If it is not [sic] so it is due to the Army who have captured him that they should be disabused on this subject at once One time more and the last is the Country lo lw placed in a State of defence if it is not the people had better gather up the few Scattered fragments of glory which are left and put out beyond the Sabine before faU With great respect Your ol.Jcdienl Servant Tho J Ru::-k
