capacitated lo acl without the consent of lhe other. The governor I first understood him wanted us lo go lo San Antonio. The Council thought we ought to go lo Labahea and join Fannin but neither gave us the means to go lo either place & the fact is neither wanted us & both seemed to be jealous of us. We found out in a few days that we were trifled with and Gilmore who was then our captain disbanded the company and he himself went home together with a few others whiJethose of us who were determined to try Texas a little longer rambled about the country waiting lo see if our service would be needed, as soon as we heard of the approach of the Mexican army towards Bexar we hastened towards that place. This was about the first of March-We have since that time been constantly in the army & it is left for others to say how we have discharged our duty-We have served now about three months & have a long road to retrace the sickly season is coming on and the weather is getting warmer we have seen it we may say the enemy out of the country-We expect to return in the fall with more of our friends with us-Taking these things into consideration & that we have been in service more than three months. I hope you will feel no hesitation in discharging us

Your friend & obed Servant James Gillespie Capt.
