it has reference to the army, in the same manner as the general and army of the Texians are bound on their part. Both contracting parties also agreed, that some commissioners might be named on the part of general Rusk, who should march, wither with the Mexican army, or separate from it, with the information necessary, in order that they might make the just remonstrances, conformably to what is expressed in the said treaties, with the understanding that everything belonging lo them that exists in the army of operations shall be delivered to them. And for the evidence and compliance by both parties, the two belligerent parties agreed to extend in duplicate the present document with the commissioners. To the President and members of the Cabinet Gentlemen
The duties of my office, are incompatible with my love of tranquility and ease. The responsibilities,] heed not; but the labor and attendent perplexities, are greater than I [am I willing lo encounter. As there are many gentlemen advantageously known lo the public, who will be pleased to accept the situation which I occupy, I feel myself at liberty lo return to domestic quiet. 1 cannot retire however without expressing my thanks to the President and Cabinet, for the honor confered, and at the same time bearing testimony to their worth as individuals and to their integrity as public functionaries. Hoping that private and official confidence may still prevail in the cabinet, ] bet leave to tender my resignation as Secretary of War; and as a personal friend lo each member of the body Lo subscribe myself
