President Burnet Dear Sir
I feel exceedingly mortified at being blamed for what is not my fault. I have been called on to-day and severely taken to task for having issued drafts on the Government credit, or rather on the Loan made by the Commissioners Austin, Archer and Wharton, for goods, vessels, Recruits &c. &c. to aid the country in their struggles, and now when Lhose drafts come due there is no funds to pay them; this circumstance in a Commercial Community is very bad, and has affected our individual credit. We have told the holders of these drafts, that the Government would send us the money deposited here (or rather the check for it) and that Col Triplett and the Commissioners would all contribute to reestablish the Government credit as soon as they should arrive. The inconvenience you will suffer must be attributed to these circumstances, and not to any want of exertion on my part to forward you the supplied you so much need. If Col. Triplett should not come at all, we must have full and complete authority to issue Land Script and sell it to redeem the credit of the Government as well as our own; which the Government cannot, in conscience deny us. Very RespcctfuUy Your Obt. Svt. Edward Hall
