which left on the 30th April is, that Santa Anna was not within 80 leagues of the Brasos at the time he was taken. The Friends of Mexico or rather the Friends of Mexican Dollars, will not believe that you have capturd Santa Anna, as it would reflect too much on his good General ship as well as his superior genius & shrewdness, and that If you have got him he will get away. I can only laugh at such nonsence altho expressd by men of high standing. The fact is we have many enemies here & I am sorry our financial affairs cannot be better managed to put down the slurs of the shylocks who would sacrafice their own relations to enrich themselves. The Government I presume are satisfied that we could & wood furnish all their wants if we could have full powers to issue land script the only means I can possibly think of to restore their Credit and place it on as good a footing as any Government. I am convinced of the numerous difficulties you labor under in organising the new government, and am extremely sorry I cannot supply all their wants & have their minds untrammelld at least for this Branch of Business. · The capture of the Brig Pocket you will learn by letters &c from this agency, has caused a great deal of trouble and the U. S. Government have orderd armed vessels to convoy all American Vessels to & from Mexican ports, to prevent future interruptions of American commerce- I left at Mr Andrews House in Brasoria a copy of Marshals life of Washington, which is intended as a present to the Government from this Agency, will you be good enough to send for it and accept it for the Government With the best respects of Your Obt Servt Edward Hall (3107) [HAWK.INS to SECRETARY of NAVY]
