Agency of Texas New Orleans May 19th 1836
His Ex the President of the Republic of Texas Sir
We have jusl heard the Mr Triplett returned form the Sabine to Head Quarters, the consequences of his delay in reaching N Orleans has been disastrous in the extreme, the Credit has been prostrated, & threaghls are now made to stop the public vessels on Contracts made for outfits. the result time will determine. our situation is truly alarming. Toby & Brothers, agreed to fit out the two vessels on receiving an advance form Gen Green, when all is ready to start he positively refuses to pay the unsettled Bills on the Brutus, & also the balance of the advance to the Crew. In this situation (suspended by another appointment & wilhout authority to act) we are compel'd to leave the public vessels to the mercy of Creditors. altho' we had no agency in fitting them out, and had declined doing it until the arrival of Mr. Triplett, we have slill paid a large amount towards it, to insure despatch. now there is but about $1,500 wanting Mr Toby refuses to meet it, & we have strong fears that the whole expedition that has cost about Forty Thousand Dollars & carries 700 men will be mined. we may perhaps avoid it, & every exertion shall be used to effect the object. We cannot but feel deeply such conduct on the part of those who have received all the available means of Gen Green. had the same fund been placed in the hands of the Agency, no trouble would or could have happend these dificulties have one good ?"esu!t they will shew to your Excellency where ccnfidence can be placed in time of trouble & dificulty. we write that should we not be able to effect a settlf':rnent, no blame may be attached lo us. We enclose copies of the documents in regard to the Pocket & also name that her protest has been published in two papers. beyond the damages in documents, we have paid six
