The man arrested by Captain Stanley and now detained on the Island, I am directed by the Cabinet to have released which order you will please execute on the reception of this, the subject matter for which they were arrested being cognizable before another tribunal and not properly coming before the Cabinet.

Dear Sir: -
Availing myself of the privilege of a friend, I must take the liberty of warning you of the excitement of the people. We have received information here of extraordinary liberty allowed the prisoners under your eye, and knowing the naturaJ benevolence of your character, I do not hesitate to believe, I may pretent to know better the character of the people of these people of Texas than you can, as well as the motives and principles that actuate the worse part of mankind, which you, having no feeling in common cannot pretend to understand. If Santa Anna is not spared for some evident political advantage, the people will not be satisfied without a trial. If he has not violated the laws of nations by his conduct toward Fannin 's division, he has at least violated the laws of this country by a deliberate murder, for which he must be tried, if not spared for scme great palitica! advantage. You have taken the responsibility for his safe keeping; the people will hold you personally responsible, and the world will not afford you a place of concealment if he or any of his suite should under any circumstances escape. This is from one who loves you very much, the country more; who has the same feelings of the
