families on the bay and bayou - It is important Lo use the flour of the Durango first, as I am told it is in some danger of spoiling. I fear Lhere will be no sugar and coffee to spare to families - The army cannot be kcpl together without an occasional supply of these articles and the amount on hand is limited - You must use the provisions on board the prize Brig Pocket taking special care to keep a minute account of every article taken from her - The Secty of War will authorise you to take charge of the Brig Pocket and her loading - In doing so you would be only prudent in having an inventory made out and properly authenticated, of every article on board of her and pertaining to her, including her own tackle appraisal &c. You will be careful to place on board of her, good, honest, sober men, if to be found. You will send a competent supply of bread and flour to the hospital on buffalo bayou- Every exertion ought to be made to procure a supply of fresh beef for the island and for the navy forces that may be in port - Commodore Hawkins expressed some dissatisfaction on the part of his crew in relation lo the distribution of fresh provisions- Do try and avoid occasion of discontent on all sides Present my compliments to the gallent Commodore and tell him fresh beef is what I cannot get here for my sick family. We have had but one sight of that article since we arrived - but I hope we shall soon do better - Without the cheering influence of "hope", who would live in Texas.

Yours &c D. G. Burnet.
