relinquish to him our claim upon the Ten Thousand Dollars deposite, and further to leave the payment to the action of Mr Triplet, all these propositions were refused, and the consequence has been that the Government credit is prostrated; today for the first time your paper is protested. The friends of Texas are willing when they can receive and disburse money & obtain a commission to be considered the patriots of Liberty; but when it comes to the trial they are found wanting. We wash our hands of the protest of the Government paper. We have sustained the public credit until our personal safety has been compromised, to do it further, without some chance of support, would be madness. A relief in a few days may remedy the evil, but should it not arrive, both the Agency & the Government are sacraficed I have the honour to be Yours Respectfully &c

Your communication of [illegible] were recd yesterday I presume Capt Harris of the Steam boat Cayuga will have returned to the harbor before now. Your apprehentions that he would follow up the Cabinet is certainly without just foundation- As soon as possible we wish the Cayuga to proceed to Buffalo bayou to take the families residing there to their respective homes - Some of those families - perhaps all of them, will be in want of flour &c You must exercise a sound discretion in distributing provisions in this manner - One general rule to be observed is that the army "must" be sustained - After that it is the desire of the government to contribute all in its power to comfort of fa·mili~s v:ho have sustair.e:! losses from the enemy or from the Chances of War- lt is possible the Laura will not have arrived in time to take the flour from the Durango, Should that Brig come around here with all her flour on board I should regret it - as some of that flour ought to be sent to the prisoners at the hospital and to the
