Apr 21 1836 to June 3 1836 - PTR, Vol. 6

On the 21st of the last month the Texians army achieved one of the most brilliant victories ever recorded in the annuals of history. the army of the enemy consisting of 1500 men commanded by that arch enemy of liberty the invincible Santa Anna himself were stationed at a point of woods so that no forse could approch [sic] them only through a large open prairie. the Texian army consisting of 750 men marched up in the open prairie and in 18 minutes obtained a complete victory over them The loss on our side was 7 killed & 20 wounded the enemies loss in killed was upwards of seven hundred the balance of their enemy were taken prisoners. Santa Anna and his staff were all taken in the course of the next day trying to escape in the garb of common soldiers. You will hardly credit the above statement I will give you a brief history of the most prominent acts of the enemy-Santa Annas movements were so much more precipitated than the people of Texas thought of that when he arrived in San antonio with 8000 men that garrison commonly known as the "alamo" had but 180 Texians in it Santa Anna demanded an immediate surrender of the alamo at discretion the Texians answered the insolent demand with a cannon shot he then attempted to storm the garrison and after being twice repulsed he succeeded with his overwhelming forse in putting the whole garrison to the sword by the by-had I been 5 days sooner myself and 30 of my nabours would have been in the alamo the enemy marched to Goliad the next most frontier post in our possession this place was well fortified and had 380 men the enemy felt" here whenever they came within the range of our cannon. they left this place to penetrate through the country. when the commander of the fort at Goliad saw that the enemy had left & learnt by his spies that they were making for the settlements, he blew up the fort and attempted to reach the settlements before the enemy so that our forces might concentrate & check the enemy before he overan the whole country but the enemy suspected and were ready to forestall his design a few miles from Goliad he was met by 2500 of the enemy and sustained a fight of 3 homs in leugi:l, during which time our men had made A passage through he enemies lines three different times and I firmly believe would have beaten the enemy off hut for an act which a turk would blush to have been guilty of the enemy ceased fireing & sent in a flagg they offered to our men if they would lay down their arms to send them all to New Orleans
