Mr James Treat New York
Dr Sir, You have doubtless heard the glorious news in relation to the capture of Santana. We have recd no confirmation, except that Bryan encloses & refers us to the Bullitin containing the news-This Govt has recd a confirmation satisfactory to it, through the medium of Gen. Gains letters-there is the utmost kindness of feeling on all hands in relation to our cause. Congress will continue to hammer on this matter untill the question of recognition is settled. Be so good as to discontinue the loan now going on in New York-money can be raised on better terms Let it all stand as if nothing had ever been said about it-we have recd nothing from you but one letter at Phila.-Do write frequently.
Yours respectfully S. F. Austin W. H. Wharton

Col. James Morgan Comd. Post of Galveston Sir
I have this moment read your communication to the Seely of War, of 15 inst. Stating that Capt. Stanley had brought in a number of citizens who were obnoxcious to charges &c. The case of Mr. White and his Son afforded you an example of the disposition of the government in relation to such captures. Capt. Stanley is on many accounts a very unsuitable person to invest with authurity tu itfrtsi. 1..:itize11::;. Bul th~ Secy of War will give you the proper order in relation to these citizens. The law provides with Sufficient severity for the cases that appear to be made of the arrested persons and unless they are guilty of some overt act of treason it is better to leave them to the future
