To His Excellency the President of Texas Sir
Understanding that some discontent exists in regard to the grant obtained by me upon Galveston Island, and that you express regret at having issued it, I hereby surrender my right to the same in the shape of a grant, but not my designation of the boundary as filed with the Secretary of State, and my future claim to a grant for the same. As Doct Niblett was induced to invest $1920 which he told me he only did in this script, because of his suppo:;ed right to appropriate and obtain a grant for the land, a11d as that same has been appropriated for the Government of Texas, its return immediately by me to Doctor Nibletl, will be necessary in case he requires it, as a condition of the said surrender. Understanding further, that there are those who have thought my stay in Texas censurable after accepting of the agency confered upon me, and feeling a consciousness of having the consent of yourself for my delay until the late battle, and that I have used all reasonable efforts to get off since, I deem such complaints improper, and intended to purchase a resignation. My wish to render what service I can, will prevent my doing so, until time is allowed to look around for a successor. In the interim I shall endeavor lo show myself worthy of the confidence reposed in me. on the first day of July 11ext. yott will comider my resignation as tendered-And as I have accepted the office without pay or emolument attached to it, I hope I shall escape the animadversions of. those who seem displeased with my conduct. I am not moved to this step by undignified pique-I accepted the
