His Ex the Prcsiden t of the Republic of Texas, Sir
Since our last respects the Invincible has been ceased upon a charge of Piracy & the Crew imprisoned for the caph1re of the Pocket, We had them brought as soon as possible to an examination employed the ablest Counsel &c the Trial lasted three days, they were acquitted at 12 Oclock at night on the third day, the grounds of the acquittal we will hereafter explain. The result is that it will not do for a Texian vessel to caph1re any vessel under American colours, unless a regular Blockade is declared, & the vessel has been first ordered off with an endorsement upon her Register, & she then attempts to return, this is the legal opinion of our firsl Lawyers. We enclose a Copy abridged of the Trial. The greatest exertions were made by the Agency & it was the cause of much anxiety & deep interest, the Counsel employed and those who volunteered deserve the public thanks of the government. & we trust they will receive it, Lhey were O P Jackson-Seth Barton-Randal Hunt & T G Hunt, Esquires. The Crew after being released had a splendid supper given to them, and a free admission
