Head Quarters of the Army Battle Ground San Jacinto 30th April 1836
To Col. Edwd. Burleson Sir
The Commanding General directs your continued vigilance and activity with the Command under your direction-You have no doubt before the discovered the importance of the renewal of this precaution. You will use your discretion whether lo remain al Fort Bend or return to the Main Army-In the mean time obtain such information as you can off the Enemy without risking an action west of the Brazos-You can with your force keep the Enemy from crossing, and it will be proper to keep all boats and crafts on this side the river-The Steam Boat has not returned nor has the President yet arrived-Gent Well who has come to Camp does not give very satisfactory information-I do not know what force the Enemy have, nor whether they are falling back-We cannot trust the Enemy. We must watch them-
I have the honor to be Sam Houston Com. in Chief
