[2925] {BRYAN to BURNET] Agency of Texas New Orleans April 30 1836

His Ex the President of the Republic of Texas Sir

Our last respects were by the hands of Capt Szymanski by land, as bearer of dispatches. In which we named that we had been obliged lo order the Invincible to sea, as papers were making out to slop her on a charge of piracy, for the capture of the Pocket. We furnished her with provisions &c. The United States will never allow the capture of vessels under her Flag, unless a Blockade is declared & the vessels have been first ordered back to her port of lading. The Brutus is now here, we have not a dollar of public money to fit her out. Mr Triplett the last accounts was still in Texas, waiting upon the frontiers the result of the War, if the Mexicans are defeated, we shall be provided with the means to assist you lo carry on the war. We to-day made a proposition to Messrs Toby & Brother, to endorse over your Check upon the Bank of Orleans for $ I 0,000, the amount to be used in filling for sea the Invincible & Brutus, & to give them a receipt for the amount, the offer was refused! We have made every exertion for a compromise so as lo place that sum to answer the present demands, but have found it useless. We refrain from comments, the burden & peril of the agency of Texas was taken by us, when others dared not risk the responsibility, it rests with the Executive to determine, if they shall reap the honour & reward. The best proof of devotion lo any cause is the assumption of responsibility. Our responsibilities must be appreciated by the Government. Under the appointment of Mr Triplett, we can do nothing until his arrival, should he be detained a month, the supplies of Government must be kept back. We have no authority lo acl. We do not consider ourselves authorized fa~ther than lo complete the contracts made previous to the arrival of Mr Hall. We have published in the papers the approval of the Executive of our appointment by the Commissioners &c. & the several Proclamations forwarded. By the Good Hope you will receive from Mr. Hall an Invoice of Sundries. The articles sent as donations are so named in the Invoice, the two 6 lb Cannon belong to the Government, &
